It's December, and we're headed into flu season. With a pandemic
looming over us. Could that mean longer lines at urgent care
centers, as people seek out care? Or will people be more likely
to shy away from urgent care, as the numbers of people with
COVID-19 infections continue to rise?
I'm writing an article for the news blog for Staff Care (see:
https://www.singlecare.com/blog/) about the situation that we're
likely to see in urgent care centers this winter. The readers
will be physicians, nurse practitioners, and PAs--in other
words, the kind of people who might be working in such
facilities or overseeing people or partnering with people who
work in urgent care settings.
I will be exploring what to anticipate this flu season, in light
of COVID-19, in the urgent care setting. Basically, we want to
look at what you could expect to see in our urgent care centers
this winter and what factors will influence that. Do you think
that urgent care centers are going to be busier than usual this
year or are they likely to be not as busy, and why?
Other questions I hope to address:
*Would you recommend that patients still continue to visit
urgent care centers this winter for things like flu tests, or
would you have other advice for them?
*How should providers approach this winter if they work in this
type of setting, from a health and safety standpoint? (That is,
should they be getting a seasonal flu shot? Looking into whether
or not they'll be eligible for one of the COVID vaccines? Taking
other steps?)
*What should providers who work or may consider taking on some
temporary work in the urgent care setting consider as they
approach the heart of flu season...in the middle of a pandemic?
Should they consider working at facilities close to home, if
they're looking on taking on some extra shifts?
