positivity. Remember "The Secret", the success-visualization
hokum championed by Oprah Winfrey and co? It ascribed almost
mythical powers to positive thinking: dream of a car, and it'll
arrive. More than a decade later, that relentless upbeatness has
taken hold in culture and turned into the new scourge of our
working lives: toxic positivity. Its clinical name, per
psychotherapist Whitney Goodman, is "dismissive positivity" -
that cheerfulness that denies emotional oxygen to any feelings
other than a rictus grin. Sometimes we deploy it on ourselves
(call it FOBN, or fear of being negative) or sometimes we use it
on others; if we're upbeat, we tell ourselves, everything will
eventually feel OK. In the wake of COVID-19, of course, it's
likely to gather momentum even more - as we're deluged with
incentives and instructions to show #gratitude (for health, for
retaining our jobs) Silicon Valley has worsened the problem,
with its emphasis on yes culture and yes-we-can. And there's a
gendered component too: women, more than men, are expected to
show sunny, Pollyanna-style tendencies at all times.
I'm looking for submissions as follows New books, ideally
published in January 2021 as part of the wellness onslaught
publishing unleashes over that period each year, which focus on
this topic, or touch on it in depth in some way. We'd like to
feature a new book or two whose gist, put simply, is "It's OK
not to be OK" Experts who can comment on this, in particular
folks who might have developed training modules or classes to
help people unlearn their toxic positivity a lean into the
feeling of just-so-ness. Suspect that learning to do that in
2020 has been more important than ever. Anyone else who can
offer a measured, first hand perspective on this subject. Please
