18) Summary: Tax Ramifications for Employers and Employees of Work from Home

Name: Julie Bawden-Davis American Express Business Trends & Insights

Category: Business and Finance

Email: query-bmxh@helpareporter.net

Media Outlet: American Express Business Trends & Insights

Deadline: 12:00 PM PST - 5 December

Query:

When the tax reform became law at the end of 2017, employees
lost the ability to deduct expenses related to maintaining a
home office for tax years 2018-2025. However, much of 2020, many
employees have maintained home offices and are spending a great
deal more money on work from home.

This article will focus on the ways employers can deal with
this, as well as other tax ramifications for companies of
employees working from home.

1) Comment on how employees aren't able to deduct expenses
related to maintaining a home office now, and how that can, in
turn, affect employers taxwise. 2) Comment on the various ways
employers can deal with this. For example, a) covering those
expenses for employees; b) employees covering the expenses and
getting reimbursed, c) employers upping pay to make up the
difference; d) employees get no reimbursement/compensation
(obviously this last option is not good for morale.) What are
the best choices taxwise. 3) Other tax ramifications for
companies of employees working from home. What employee leaders
need to consider and what they should do. 4) Anything else that
is important to mention.

Requirements:

I require answers from business tax experts and business owners
addressing this issue and how they are doing so. I am unable to
use answers from franchise owners and CBD businesses.
