The entertainment industry has failed to leverage massively
popular gaming properties for on-screen entertainment. After
several box office flops over the last decade, the desire on
Hollywood's part began to cool. But I believe we have officially
entered the next major push to turn video games into the next
major IP war.
The success of The Witcher (Netflix) and Sonic (Paramount) seems
to have reinvigorated Hollywood interest. The near future
includes a deluge of high profile adaptations: Mortal Kombat, a
new Resident Evil TV series, Uncharted (delays and all), Halo
(ditto), The Last of Us, Assassin's Creed, etc.
Can video games IP get past their nerd origins and pull off the
same success as comic book genre IP? Games are inherently
interactive whereas comics more closely match the experience of
passively watching film or TV, in which the story unfolds. How
can Hollywood adapt to properly bring these titles to a new
medium? Finally, given the precarious state of cinema at the
moment and the finite amount of recycled IP, can video game
properties emerge as a lucrative new funnel of fresh content to
library starved studios?
