I'm writing a high-level/backgrounder type piece on market
capitalization and it's importance to investors. It's aimed at
new investors and non-experts.
I'm now just looking for clarification on one piece: the
difference between "market capitalization" (which I understand
is a very specific thing: outstanding shares times share price)
and "market value".
I am aware that some people (like "Investment Banking For
Dummies") understand these to be synonymous terms. Others say
they're distinct concepts; that "market value" is a more
amorphous concept and can be indicated by a number of measures
like price-to-earnings ratios, etc.
I'm looking for some clarification on these concepts.
