by basically any standards. Right now, she is sick and can only
talk to people by Zoom. The other day on a Zoom call, she was
feeling very agitated. "Tracey," she said, "What have you done

street." She looked at me with pure disgust. This is not new.
Her last letter to me lambasted me for all the ways I have
failed in life. A lot of my family seems to agree. I am not
alone in my sense of familial alienation. Many queer people are
estranged from their families, and the current political and
social climate doesn't help bring families closer when they
disagree on fundamental issues. I have always prided myself on
being the one who could stick it out, who could handle the
insults for the sake of maintaining a family bond. But I'm
beginning to wonder: Is it time for me to stop talking to my
family? I would like to talk to psychologists about how to
calculate the pros and cons of maintaining family connections
even when they hurt.

Here are my questions: 1. How do you tell the difference between
familial interactions that are uncomfortable and those that
border on emotional abuse? I want to give my readers some clear
signs to look for that will help them parse out the difference
between conflict and abuse. 2. If a relationship with a family
member becomes too painful for a person to bear, do you
recommend cutting ties? What are other options? 3. What kinds of
strategies could a person use if they don't actually want to cut
ties, but want to heal relationship wounds? 4. What kinds of
strategies you recommend for people who feel like they do have
to cut ties? Is there a good order of operations? 5. What kinds
of resources do you recommend for people who have estranged
family situations? 6. I go to ACA meetings, so I know a lot of
people who have strained or estranged relationships with their
families. Some people find new family-like people to spend
holidays, etc with, but some people don't. How can people who
may become estranged from their families find other orphans? How
can they set up a support system? (Is this a whole separate
