Name: Erik Martin Speech Technology magazine
Category: GeneralEmail: query-bd3r@helpareporter.net
Media Outlet: Speech Technology magazine
Deadline: 1:00 PM EST - 8 October
Query:
My name is Erik Martin and I am a freelance writer for Speech
Technology Magazine (www.speechtechmag.com). I'm looking to
interview speech technology experts, voice-based information
companies, artificial intelligence experts, regulatory experts,
and other related professionals for the following story topic:
The Regulatory Landscape for Data-Driven Voice Solutions. This
article will explore how new government regulations, like the
European Union's General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) and
the California Consumer Protection Act (CCPA), and others will
affect what voice-based information companies (companies whose
solutions allow businesses to collect and store voice data, like
voiceprints used for customer identity verification, etc.) can
collect, how they can use it, what they can do with it, how they
can store it, and what they need to do to protect it.
Below is a list of questions I'm seeking answers to for this
story. I can only conduct email interviews, whereby you or your
suggested sources types up written responses to my questions
below that I can use as quotes in my story (that's also often
easier and ensures no accidental misquoting). My deadline is
Thursday, October 8, before noon central. Please e-mail me back
your interest and availability or your typed up answers to these
questions:
QUESTIONS 1. Overall, how would you summarize and describe the
state of government regulation - particularly in the United
States - when it comes to data collected, used, and stored by
voice-based information companies? 2. Can you please trace the
timeline/evolution of regulations in this space? 3. Please
explain what new/recent government regulations are in effect or
have been proposed that are significant and designed to affect
what voice-based information companies can collect, use, store,
and protect data (e.g., GDPR, CCPA, etc.). 4. Do you believe
it's important that state/national governments get involved in
this issue and enforce more regulations on speech data
companies? Why/why not? 5. What effect can/will these
regulations have on what speech data companies can collect and
what they can do with the data? 6. What unique threats might
speech data be subject to that would necessitate greater
regulation? Please provide one or more examples. 7. What steps
should voice-based information companies be taking to prevent
these threats/risks? Please provide details and specific
recommendations (e.g., Requirements around how customers should
be notified that their voice may be recorded, etc.). 8. Are
there any potential risks of over-regulation, which could for
example stifle speech tech innovation or the ability for these
voice-based information companies to sufficiently conduct
business? 9. Can you also suggest one or more other experts I
should try to interview for this story (if so, please provide
contact information)? 10. Any other tips, thoughts, comments or
ideas on this topic you'd like to add? 11. What is your full
name, title, company, and city/state headquarters?

Query:
The pandemic, of course, has impacted certain industries more
than others - airlines, for instance, have been in its economic
crosshairs. But what about airports, and the businesses that
operate within them? The slump in flying numbers has turned
their departure halls into ghost towns - and proved ruinous for
the retailers within them. Airport shops and restaurants in
America will lose $3.4bn between now and the end of 2021,
forecasts the Airport Restaurant & Retail Association; two in
three airports were losing money before the crisis but now all
of them are. Think globally, and there's an impact in
particular on the luxury sector. Airport retail was long its
dirty secret, a place where a surprising amount of its trade
(around 6% of global total sales) are transacted; Bain says that
sales in this sector aren't likely to return to 2019 levels
before 2025. That's it's likely to get worse: the UK government
has announced that it will slash the right to sell goods (other
than booze and cigarettes) tax-free stateside from January 2021,
after the country exits the EU - and just when retailers in
airports will need that advantage most. Heathrow, of course, is
the busiest airport in Europe. So what are the solutions, and
how can airport retail rebound even the pandemic remains a live
challenge? I want to hear from the following: -- Firms which can
provide hard data and numbers on airport retail, especially in
the luxury sector, and up to date research on the overall state
of the luxury market as the pandemic has taken hold worldwide.
-- Luxury sector analysts and luxury goods experts who can
discuss in depth the challenges of the shrinking airport retail
market thanks to COVID 19 and the potential impact from the UK's
changing rules -- Fashion and retail experts with first hand
knowledge of airport retail who can share anecdotes,
observations and insights about how it works - and what
solutions there might be as the luxury airside sector faces such
awful headwinds.

I'm working on a piece about the digital discount battle. There
are now countless rival services set up to act like discount
rayguns on our online purchases, zapping the price with a click
of a button: Honey, RetailMeNot, Paribus, PriceBlink, the
Camelizer and more. They're really nothing more than virtual
coupon-finders, but still, they've attracted huge interest as
acquisition targets: Capital One now owns Paribus (deal terms
were not disclosed) while PayPal spent $4bn on Honey, its
largest acquisition ever. But do they really work? What is
their advantage to retailers versus customers - data, data, data
of course? Many of them are browser-first, so what does that
mean in an increasingly mobile e-commerce space? What new
discount-providing offerings are launching, and how do they aim
to snatch share from these off-price OGs? Are any of them
integrating with brick & mortar operations and if so, how? Put
most simply: what is the future of discounting online? I'd like
to hear from the following - Other similar services which offer
automated or pain-free ways of securing discounts from a variety
of retailers online. Please send a single para pitch. -
Shopping, retail and personal finance experts who can offer
insider expertise to help contextualize these companies and
explain how and why they exist. Please send a single para bio
and some brief, topline responses to a couple of the questions
outlined above.
Requirements:
