of common phrases most people don't realize are actually sexist.
There are several articles that cover this topic, but most focus
on what are (to me, at least) very obvious examples of phrases
with origins rooted in gender, like someone "wearing the pants
in a relationship" or "having the balls to do something" or that
they should "man up" or "grow a pair."
"Rule of thumb" is one that comes up a lot, but that has a
complicated origin story, so no need to pitch that again.
Ideally, I'm looking for examples like the word "hysterical" or
the phrase "in hysterics," now commonly used regardless of
gender, but originating as a reference to "female hysteria" (a
made-up medical condition).
Requirements:
I'd love to hear from linguists and/or historians or other
experts in this area.
I'm unable to conduct phone interviews for this article, so if
you're interested in weighing in, please reply with your
example(s) of an expression/word/phrase most people don't
realize was sexist, along with an explanation of its origins.
