the rolls you see on others. But what drives this odd
fascination?
For many of us, the amount of fat we carry is directly tied to
our self worth. But there's nothing particularly special about
excess fat. In fact, it can often seem like an invasive

wealth and privilege, but how times have changed. Today, a low
body fat percentage can be a point of pride and exclusivity.
I'm seeking a better understanding of fat, and I'm hoping to

What purpose does fat serve? How much is too much and why?
What are the risks of too little fat? How can some people stay
thin no matter what they eat?
Why do most of us seem to accumulate it so easily? What makes it
so hard to lose? Did people of the past ever have concerns about
obesity (either aesthetically or for health), or is it merely a
modern obsession?
Why are we so obsessed about fat, when did it start, and why
does it seem like the obsession grows in tandem with our obesity
epidemic? Do you know any countries or communities who have
positive feelings toward fat? What's behind their different
perspective?
In the last 20 years or so, I've noticed a growing trend of fat
pride, where people are deciding to embrace their size rather
than live in shame of it. I'm all for people feeling better
about themselves, but is this trend evidence that we're turning
against a standard that is impossible for most of us of to meet,
or simply giving up?
How do we get rid of fat? What methods are safe and reliable and
what's a bad idea?
Why do women typically carry more fat than men? Men are
typically considered healthy under 20 percent fat, and women
under 30 percent. But what determines these numbers, and can you
carry more fat and still be healthy?
