Over the past few decades, more care has been shifted from
hospitals and acute-care settings to outpatient and
community-based settings. It's become routine to get certain
kinds of care in an outpatient setting, in fact.
However, the coronavirus pandemic has left its mark. Many people
are understandably anxious about receiving services and care
such as OT or PT in outpatient settings right now. Demand has
decreased for this kind of care in many areas. Experts hope it
will be temporary, but in the meantime, healthcare providers are
working to reassure their existing patients that they will meet
all the guidelines for providing safe care.
I am looking for a healthcare expert who can provide some advice
to those providers--those physical therapists, occupational
therapists, PT and OT assistants, and speech-language
pathologists--about delivering care while abiding by safety
guidelines set out by the CDC (see:
https://www.cdc.gov/infectioncontrol/pdf/outpatient/guide.pdf).
What would you tell them about the importance of abiding by
infection control and safety guidelines right now, during this
pandemic? What other advice would you give to them about
approaching their jobs right now? How can they make sure they
are sticking to guidelines and doing their best to keep their
patients safe?

As someone who has lived with a (physical) chronic idiopathic
condition for 8 years, I know how it mentally debilitating and
depressing it can be. Personally, my self-esteem, social life,
sex life, mental health, and faith have all been threatened. As
all chronic conditions are different (and therefore their
treatments are too), I understand that any advice offered will
never be applicable to all. However, I feel deeply that there is
a way, somehow, they can be addressed. For example, when I found
community--someone who had been diagnosed with *exactly* what I
had--I began to feel a bit more hopeful. So I am looking for
expert insight from therapists/psychologists (and medical
practitioners, if applicable) on how those with chronic
conditions can manage their mental health and nurture
themselves. I want to stay away from simply telling them to
"stay positive."
