severe cramps and was hoping that an expert who has researched
certain women's health conditions as they affect BIPOC
individuals could weigh in. See questions below.
1. Are Black and Latinx people disproportionately diagnosed with
PCOS, or are their symptoms just more severe because of the
prevalence of other comorbidities in those communities? Would it
potentially present differently for women of color?
2. What about endometriosis? I've read some research stating
that it tends to be more prevalent in white females, and even
more so in Asian females, than in Black and Latinx people.
However, I've also read that Black women, for example, are often
misdiagnosed. Could you confirm why it's so hard to diagnose,
and why many women are often falsely told it's in their head, or
just "bad cramps", etc. (and in the case of Black women, medical
racism might be at play)?
3. Thyroid conditions can also be potential causes of cramps. Is
there a higher association of thyroid conditions (like
hyperthyroidism, hypothyroidism) in Black and brown females, and
if so, why? Is this another condition that's likely to be
ignored or misdiagnosed?
