6) Summary: Senator would ban police from buying from data brokers

Name: Grant Gross Washington Examiner

Category: High Tech

Email: query-b7jy@helpareporter.net

Media Outlet: Washington Examiner

Deadline: 11:00 AM EST - 2 September

Query:

Senator Ron Wyden plans to introduce a bill, called The Fourth
Amendment is Not for Sale, which would would ban law enforcement
agencies from buying information from data brokers to circumvent
normal warrant processes.

"I think we've really reached the point where you have so much
data floating around that governments can essentially buy their
way around the Fourth Amendment," Wyden told The Verge.

https://www.theverge.com/2020/8/4/21354244/ron-wyden-fcc-nomination-section-230-trump-order-vergecast-interview

Given that the bill isn't introduced yet, I had a couple of
questions:

-- Is this a good idea? Will this protect privacy?

-- Could this hamper law enforcement? How often are law
enforcement agencies now buying private data from data brokers?

-- This seems unlikely to pass this year. Do you see this as a
big issue that will be addressed in 2021 or later?

Hi! I'm a staff writer for Ad Practitioners, LLC, parent company

I'm writing an article about the current scrutiny regarding the
data collection practices used by TikTok for a new website we
launched a few months back. I'm looking to interview a privacy

privacy issues due to the collection of MAC addresses and
biometrics. The article is about how it's problematic that
TikTok is accused of doing said things yet that seems to be it
concerning TikTok's threat. When compared to other popular apps,
the app's data collection practices are similar or perhaps even
identical.
