It's a tough time for businesses, and as a result-- we're seeing
more of them (from cafes to dentist offices) using COVID
surcharges to help get through it. Some businesses are tacking
these on as a percentage to their bills, while others are just
raising prices. This is an article for consumers trying to
understand these surcharges and if they're legal.

I'm seeking several lawyers who can answer these questions (via
EMAIL only) by Thursday 7/16, 11am EST. Please remember to
include your full name and a brief bio.

QUESTIONS 1. Are COVID surcharges legal? If the answer is "it
depends", please explain- ie. what business can legally charge
them and what they should be used for by those businesses. 2.
How should these surcharges be presented to customers? Do they
need to be made apparent (like a line item on a bill) or is it
ok to just absorb them in pricing? 3. What are consumer's legal
rights when it comes to paying surcharges? Can they refuse to
pay them? (If yes, under what circumstances can they refuse)? 4.
In your legal opinion, should businesses be charging these and
what is the best (most fair) way to do so? 5. Anything else
you'd like consumers (or businesses) to know about these
surcharges?
