I am a Cointelegraph journo currently working on a new piece
looking at encryption-based technologies and whether or not
governments should have the right to crack down on them if
miscreants misuse them. Was looking to gain some expert insights
in regard to the following questions:
(i) Law enforcement authorities throughout Europe have arrested
over 800 individuals for making use of an encrypted messaging
service EncroChat to coordinate their illegal activities. Could
you please comment on whether the govt has done the right thing
by banning the platform outright? Shouldn't they have taken
action against the individuals involved rather than criminalize
the entire platform itself?
(ii) Over the past couple of months, a number of privacy and
security issues have sprung up in relation to Zoom, Whatsapp,
etc. Do you think these platforms offer enough privacy to their
users in order to keep bad actors in check or are their
frameworks so prone to leakages that some drastic measures need
to be taken to help bolster their existing setups? Also, even if
these platforms are not secure, does any govt have the right to
ban them under any pretext whatsoever?
(iii) Recently a bill was introduced into the US Senate that
effectively seeks to ban end-to-end encryption. The issue was
also raised in the ministerial meeting of the nations that make
up the "Five Eye" -- intelligence community -- Australia,
Canada, New Zealand, United Kingdom, and the United States. In
your estimation, is the government trying to carry out these
'busts' (like the EncroChat one mentioned earlier) so as to
discredit -- and thus put an end to -- encryption-based privacy
technologies?
(iv) Wouldnt it be best if the platforms themselves invited
regulators to help establish protocols that laid a fine balance
between encryption and censoring harmful activities maybe?
(v) Please feel free to add any more details you may see fit in
