How has COVID-19 changed the employer and (household) employee
dynamic?
There have been multiple stories in the press about the
complicated dynamic between employers and household employees
recently. It has thrown wealth inequality into starker relief,
and frankly, showcased bad behavior from many who should know
better. Plenty of families, of course, were upstanding and did
the right thing (sending staff home to stay safe, while paying
them regardless). Others dragooned them into their world and
self-isolated with them; some folks have been flying their staff
with them between homes, even. And of course, some folks simply
behaved as if nothing were different - appalling but true.
But what legacies has the lockdown left on these relationships,
both positive and challenging? How has the relationship between
employers and household staff changed over that period? Has it
increased intimacy and struck up new friendships? Have people
pitched in more to help their Help? Have people been buying
so-called Accessory Apartments in greater numbers - often, these
one bedrooms or studios, a throwback to the Downton days, aren't
even listed on a luxury buildings plans, as they're only offered
to folks who've already stumped up for one of the family-sized
pads; mostly on the lowest floors, they're considered a
staff-ready amenity akin to a gym, or rooftop garden.
I want to hear from people who can share first hand stories:
nannies, tutors, housekeepers etc who can talk (on- or
off-record) about that shifting dynamic, or even therapists who
have heard stories about it from their clients. I'd be curious
to hear, too, from staffing firms which supply household help:
how have job descriptions changed as a result of the pandemic
and associated lockdowns? I'd love to talk to psychologists,
too, who can share insights into why and how those relationships
changed.
