MBA recruitment in to the corporate world: Can you be more
specific?
There is a war for talent; great employees are needed to push
businesses and economies through challenging times, and the onus
should be on recruiters and employers to be more forthcoming
with what they want and need in terms of strategically building
talent pipelines in partnership with Business School.
At the moment, is MBA recruitment too transactional?
The rhetoric is always focused on Business Schools having to
source and put the work in with employers to forge strong
relationships in terms of talent pipelines - and find out what
they want essentially.
But, are employers being too 'generic' in terms of their
requirements for MBA graduates - and they are disinclined to
have detailed conversations about what their businesses need at
specific times?
It's easy for employers to say they're looking for
'trustworthiness', 'collaboration', 'innovation', 'creativity'
'good work ethic' etc.
Are employers just using these terms because they're easy and
inoffensive and resonate with everyone? Are they asking for too
much for specific jobs? What do they actually want to see?
Most commentary on the issue puts the onus on Business Schools
to interpret and to translate what employers need ...
But do employers really know what they want from Business
Schools? And why is the terminology so generic and - arguably -
wishy washy?
How can an MBA demonstrate their relevant at a recruitment fair
or in an interview if they're not completely clear on what
employers need, and or prepared for this? Is it the same across
the board for every role they're filling?
The expectation is always on Business Schools to deliver and, to
a certain extent employers are customers - for executive
education and customised programmes for example.
But the primary customer of the School is the student but the
employer perspective will not always deliver what's best for the
student.
Therefore, should Business Schools be telling employers how they
can best mould students that they will want to hire in ways they
haven't considered yet?
This gets into the old theory vs practice argument, but Schools
should be empowered to influence practice with their research
and therefore they should also be able to influence the tone of
skills being sought after. This article will seek to put
forward the opinions of both Business Schools and employers to
work out how they can better speak the same language when it
comes to MBA recruitment.
Questions to consider are:
* Why are we having the same conversation about talent and
skills in terms of recruitment that we were having 10 years ago?
Is progress being made?
* Are employers actively using strategic partnerships with
Business Schools to build talent pipelines?
* Do you think that generic terminology such as
'collaboration', 'trustworthiness', 'innovation', 'creativity',
and 'talent' are clear enough when communicating with MBA
Business Schools in terms of the skills they're nurturing with
students?
* What are employers looking for from MBA graduates
specifically?
* What do employers expect MBAs to be able to do once they
arrive into their organisations - and why are they not clear as
to what they need?
* Do HR teams know what they want for MBA-specific leadership
roles or are they using a tick box exercise for all roles?
* Is it time employers stopped expecting candidates and
Business Schools to know what they're looking for and spell it
out?
* How does culture come into play here? Are employers and
Business Schools sharing values and purpose when partnering for
career pathways?
* Is recruitment is too transactional in terms of employers
telling Business Schools skills they need and picking graduates,
as opposed to Business Schools telling employers the skills they
should need, and discussing requirements?
* If Business Schools are leading the way in terms of business
thought and trend analyses, surely they should be the driving
force in solving the talent crisis? How can they move into this
strategic position in the employment agenda?
Requirements:
Ideal commentators would be employers (heads of recruitment / HR
directors), executive head hunters or recruitment agencies,
Careers experts from Business Schools and / or MBA graduates who
can share their own recruitment experience.
