29) Summary: How Shifts to a Remote Workforce May Impact Salary/Pay Structures

Name: Lin Grensing-Pophal SHRM

Category: Business and Finance

Email: query-b07c@helpareporter.net

Media Outlet: SHRM

Deadline: 7:00 PM EST - 10 July

Query:

As companies discover that remote work models might work better
for them than they had thought previously to the COVID-19
pandemic, how might this shift impact pay decisions? For
instance, if a NYC-based company hires locally they would need
to pay the prevailing wage rate to remain competitive. But this
would change if they were suddenly able to recruit employees
from around the country - or globe. Would they/should they pay a
remote employee living in rural Montana the same rate as someone
in NYC? Why/why not?

I'm interested in hearing from HR/compensation experts about
their thoughts on this, as well as from those whose companies
already offer varying rates of pay when they operate in a range
of locations that all have different costs of living, wage
rates, etc. How do you make decisions related to pay ranges
across different geographies? How do you communicate these
differences to employees? To job candidates? What pushback, if
any, have you had? What best practice advice would you offer to
others who now find themselves needing to make decisions about
varying pay (or not) when dealing with a remote workforce?
